KERALA ANNOUNCES BIOTECHNOLOGY POLICY

Biotechnology - The Flavour of the Twenty-First Century

The State Government of Kerala has formulated a biotech policy in view of the major strides made by Biotechnology, its future potential and the perception that it will impact this century more than any other technology.

Announcing its biotechnology policy, Kerala Government has stated that it would set up an Rs 100 crore fund for developing basic infrastructure to promote biotech industries in the state. To implement the policy the Kerala Biotechnology Board and the Kerala Biotechnology Commission have been set up.

Kerala Biotechnology (BT) Policy: Objectives & Goals

The BT policy for Kerala is designed to catalyze the development and application of BT, taking advantage of the State's resources and emphasizing its specific needs while meeting global requirements.

The policy is aimed to ensure the rapid exploitation of pipeline technologies and opportunities available in the State to products and processes and to promote the sustained build-up of an elite knowledge cadre and knowledge base through the strengthening and creation of educational and R&D institutions, establishing infrastructure and putting in place administrative, regulatory, legal and financial framework conducive for investment and growth of BT companies.

Kerala Biotechnology Board (KBB)

Headed by the Chief Minister, with the Ministers for Industry, Information Technology, Agriculture and Health, Chief Secretary and Vice Chairman of the State's Planning Board, two eminent industrialists and scientists/technocrats as members, the main focus of the KBB is to organize a corpus of Rs 100 crores and provide Biotechnology Enterprises of the State a consistent, completive edge by taking top level administrative and financial decisions and liaising with national and international agencies.

As the proactive enabler of BT, the KBB will ensure growth by spearheading a number of initiatives in:

Education, Regulatory Affairs, Human Resource Development, Agriculture, Industrial Biotechnology, Marine Resources, Healthcare, Ayurveda and Traditional Medicines, Biodiversity, Environment, Bioinformatics and the development of Biotechnology Parks.

Kerala Biotechnology Commission (KBC)

The high level KBC will address all ethical, moral environmental, economic and social issues and imperatives in fostering BT and will be responsible for the balanced awareness and education of the public on the potential hazards and safety of Biotechnology.
