Government Biotech Initiative: Karnataka

Karnataka's Millenium Biotech Policy

With strong traditions in education, in science and in public sector undertakings related to science and technology, Bangalore has rapidly made the transition to the new economy in Information Technology. The Government of Karnataka wishes to build on these strong foundations to make Bangalore the Biotech City of India.

Karnataka's Biotech Policy, is expected to spur the growth of the biotech industry in the State and encourage extensive research and development in the various opportunities the field offers. Karnataka already houses numerous biotech companies and quality research institutions that places it in a prominent position in the field of biotechnology.

The Government of Karnataka has constituted a Biotechnology Vision Group, chaired by Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Biocon India Ltd., to spearhead initiatives in the field of Biotechnology.

Objectives of the Millennium Biotech Policy
  • To spread awareness about the investment opportunities in biotechnology, genomics, bioinformatics, biofuels, contract research, etc., to the entrepreneurial community.
  • To sustain and maintain the present pre-eminent position of Karnataka and Bangalore in the field of biotechnology.
  • To outline a set of incentives and concessions for the biotechnology industry to attract investments to the State.
  • To provide specific infrastructure as well as enhance human resources for the development of biotechnology.
  • To encourage the growth of bioinformatics in Karnataka.
  • To provide an appropriate institutional framework to achieve all these objectives.
